OOC: "A creature that uses its action to examine the image can determine that it is an illusion."
Big fires make sound, so without that creatures will examine to see what is happening.

Ragnar moved one foot in front of the other and unseen like a white shadow upon the plane of snow. He moved up the crest towards the hutments and stopped when he could just see over the snow there. He watched as his three companions plowed through the snow towards the hut. The boy led ahead, armor clunking with each step and stumbling with every uneven patch of frozen dirt. Close behind him was the dwarf who had a tough time to keep up with his short stature but was more astute in navigating the terrain and keeping his noise down. He could not see the third companion whose even smaller size probably had allowed him to blend in much more easily.

Ragnar's gaze went back to the hut and he saw there the hump of the creature whose presence was only betrayed by minimal breathing movements. Roland was closing in soon and from 30 paces away stopped and started uttering a few words which were lost on the wind before they could reach Ragnar's ears. Suddenly flames shot up from the second hut and Ragnar held his breath as he tried to figure out what had happened. Had the wizard's apprentice snuck to the other hut and set it on fire? The hooting of the owl atop the hut brought Ragnar out of his wonderment and he looked towards the approaching ogre in the distance. The thing was picking its nose and seemed oblivious to everything that going on in front of it.

----------
Roland: 30 ft distance from hut/creature
Badger: 60 ft distance from hut/creature (As you moved to the side to get in distance of the other hut for your magic, you have line of sight of the second ogre which you spotted after Butterbrickle warned you.)
Dair: Next to Roland
Ragnar: 60 ft distance from hut/creature to the south

Having marked the beast as his foe Roland advanced towards the slumbering giant. The cold had, hours ago, seeped through the cold steel of his armor, then pervaded the layers of padding and leather that severed as a layer of cushion between his own skin and the metallic one that protected him. Despite the frigid climate and the potential death that laid ahead, every foot closer brought warmth back to his bones: he flexed his fingers around the hilt of his ancestral blade, his face was red from blood instead of the knife-chill of the wind, and his breath quickened. I am the Brick, true king of Marland and will see my land freed. No ogre in some godsforsaken waste will stop me from seeing the blood debt paid. Or so he consoled himself in his mind...despite the war that raged for years around him, Roland had never faced anything like the creature that slept in the head ahead.

He pressed forward, hoping that he would be able to at least strike the ogre before it was awakened by their presence.

Actions:

Ragnar continued on his path, he knew that time would be of the essense and he could no longer bide it, he had to move in quickly and strike while the beast was still sleeping!

As Badger watched Roland and the dwarf move off to deal with the sleeping ogre he saw the other ogre walking up the path. Too stupid to even realize the fire had appeared on the hut he decided that there was no point in keeping up the illusion. Instead he moved toward the walking ogre in hopes that he could distract it so that his companions wouldn't have to fight both of the giants at the same time.

OOC: Badger is going to move into range of the other ogre and case Tasha's hideous laughter.

Out of Thin Air - Page 5 Empty Re: Out of Thin Air

Ragnar put his legs to work hoping to join the fight before it was over and he was going to get his wish. As he approached the hut, he saw the young lord step in towards the hut with the dwarf beside him, shield at the ready. They slowed down as they approached the hut and when Ragnar's eyes went back to the entrance of the hutment, his heart jumped in his chest. The shadow of a body which had been there before, peaceful and quiet, was gone. The dwarf and armored boy peered into the darkness where not even a bit of light would reveal anything moving.

Both of them jumped as a boulder flew out of the darkness and landed just between them where it bounced and then rolled until it lay in the fresh snow. The dwarf was getting up on his feet straight away and was barking at the young man to do the same. Then out of the hut she stepped, the ogress herself, as tall as two men even hunched forward, a loincloth draped over her lower privates but her sagging breasts hanging over her extended belly, the flesh all grey and sickly with warts the size of a fist. From two deep sockets on her misshapen head her eyes looked at the two men before her with a malice not unlike any monster from the darkest tales they had ever heard and her hair long and unwashed draping over her large ears.

She carried another boulder in both hands which she heaved up high and smashed into the snow at her feet with a loud roar, a challenge to those who would intrude on her beauty sleep. With the boulder down and the hail of snow out of the way, Roland seemed to find a sudden bravery to jump forward and slash his ancestral sword at the brutess but he was just an inch too slow as she moved in the last instant. Seeing the opening, though, Dair was clever enough to move the other way relatively quick and stick the pointy end of his sword into her thigh. This only seemed to increase the anger of the ogress and the dwarf narrowly missed a retaliative swing of her arm.

Almost out of breath from running, Ragnar finally managed to catch up. He saw the female monster pre-occupied with the dwarf and immediately used the opportunity to strike at her, slashing her flailing arm as she was moving around and illiciting a loud yelp from her.

Just on the other side of the hut, Badger moved to intercept the other ogre. He bounded through the snow and in his peripheral vision saw his familiar striking out its wings and following him from above. As he neared the oblivious ogre, he could hear the roar behind him and at that instant knew the ogre before him had also heard it as he now erected himself and peered ahead. He was the ugliest looking with a jaw so square it was too wide for his face and a bushy unibrow which curled down at the edges making him look less intelligent than you would suspect his kind to already have.

The short wizard stopped in the snow as he started to cast his spell. The ogre looked down at him in confusion and watched the little colorfully dressed gnome speak the incantation and waving his arms. When he finished the ogre's features started to turn into a smile and his contours appeared gentle and there was a strange chuckle coming from the beast. Badger sighed with relief as he watched his spell take hold--until the ogre's mouth bellowed an angry shout and the hulking figure started to stride forward unslinging the tree trunk from his shoulder and heaving the thing high above his head in an effort to swat the gnome.

The trunk came down and the ogre pulled it up to inspect the underside and expected it to be full of blood and gore but finding only bark and snow. The gnome stood just a bit to the side shaking himself off as he got up out of the snow after jumping aside.

----------
Roland: Melee distance of Ogress
Badger: 10 ft distance from Ogre, about 90 feet away from the hut. (The tree trunk provides an extra 5ft reach for the Ogre.)
Dair: Melee distance of Ogress
Ragnar: Melee distance of Ogress

OOC: Dair's atk didn't do much but it was enough to trigger Ragnar's +1d8 dmg from Colossus Slayer. You did significant damage but she's not out for the count yet. By your estimate, she has more than half her HP.
Badger tried Tasha's Hideous Laughter. However, remember when I said the ogre's basic stats have been slightly adjusted? Some ability scores have been adjusted 1 point lower or higher. The Ogre's Intelligence is 4 and is therefore unaffected by the spell. (I honestly didn't plan this and didn't know the spell had that requirement until I looked it up just now.)

Ragnar wanted the beast to die, and die quickly so that his liege was no longer in dire danger.

Hefting his weapon he struck hard at the ogre, hoping to inflict maximum damage on the hideous bitch.

To say that badger was a little disappointed that his spell had failed would be something of an understatement.  This development put him in a lot more peril that he'd ever been in before and he did not like the feeling.  He swiftly said the words of magic than would spew forth an oily mess onto the ground between himself and the ogre then turned and ran back toward the hut, shouting to his comrades as he did.

"Guys, he's coming."

OOC: No worries, there's no way Badger would have known that orges in general were that stupid or that this one was even more so.

Cast Grease at the feet of the ogre and in the spaces between them so that he's in it and has to cross the rest of it to follow.  Dex save DC 14 or fall prone.

I'm thinking that even if he makes the first save that he has to make because he's standing in it when I cast it, he'll have to make another for moving into another square of it so he'll have another change to fail and fall down.  And with that 4 Int, he's probably not smart enough to go around (fingers crossed.)

The world seemed to shake for a moment longer than it should have, but Roland shook his head to clear it and was surprised to see Ragnar already charging in and attack the hideous beast. Buoyed by the wounds their Dwarven companion had inflicted and the sight of his loyal retainer, he lashed out again to smite the beast.

The ogre towering over Badger lifted his tree trunk high above his head with the intent to bring it down as soon as the gnome started to scramble away from him. He shifted his balance to prepare for a magnificent smash and in doing so felt his foot slip. He tried to steady himself but this only meant that he was now completely off kilter in the grease below him and it didn't take long for him to come crashing into the snow. On hands and knees he started to crawl out of the greasy snow and watched as the gnome decided to run for it.

Beside the hut, the fight with the ogress was still potentially dangerous. She wasn't very accurate but one hit with that boulder could shatter legs and crush skulls. Despite that, a well-coordinated three-pronged attack from all sides left the ogress barely left standing. Dair's sword cut along her left leg. Roland, the prodigy, executed a perfect move that placed him into range of some vital organs and he buried his sword into her stomach as she swung her boulder. Ragnar, eager to finish the job, stepped forward and struck her as well but in doing so placed himself in grave danger.

The hulking ulgy piece of ogre woman staggered as she felt the pricks of the weapons drive into her and shouted so loudly that it echoed over the forest and birds flew up all at once in search of safer and quiter havens. By sheer force of will, she was still standing and saw the white coat of Ragnar as the ultimate target for her boulder. It came down and Ragnar, unable to see the shadow above him in time, felt a world of pain coming down around him. He heard the bones in his leg snap as he jumped away too late and the boulder slammed down on him.

----------

Roland: Melee distance of Ogress
Badger: Right next to the hut on the other side from where the others are fighting.
Dair: Melee distance of Ogress
Ragnar: Melee distance of Ogress (9 dmg taken, hp 16/25; leg injury, half movement speed)

Won't update the sketch this time as there is only one change in location which is Badger right above the hut.

The pain that permeated every fiber of his being was nearly unbearable, but somehow Ragnar was happy, happy that Roland was healthy still and causing such massive damage to the huge ogre.

If I fall...who will protect him...

The thought left his mind as quickly as it entered and Ragnar tried to put the pain aside and strike once more at the ogress, he death was nigh he was sure.

Though he had spent his entire life with the threat of imminent and swift violence around him the Bryc heir's heart was thumping so loud it seemed almost deafening. Yes, retribution would be served and the foul beasts who would devour flesh of good folk slain - but death or maiming was not out of the question, for his companions or himself. The reality of that - the stink of the ogress, the ugly snap of Ragnar's leg - made Roland grip his ancestral blade tighter and swing again, filled with deadly purpose. You will not harm my friend again, disgusting beast. Harawyn, grant me the strength to end this.
